Anxiety Panic Attacks and Fea

If you have ever had anxiety panic attacks in your life, you have known mortal fear. I never realized how serious an anxiety panic attack was until I had my first. I don't know if anxiety attacks run in families, but in mine they sure do. My mother used to have them all the time. By all the time, of course, I mean once a month, but it seemed often enough. After one of her anxiety attacks, things were not the same for weeks. It could happen anywhere, and her reactions were unpredictable. Sometimes, she would start screaming at us hysterically. Other times, she would get confused and disoriented. The worst of them, strangely enough, were the times when she just simply broke down in sobs. She would get so upset, and nothing we could say or do would change it.

Growing up, I thought she was just crazy. To tell you the truth, I sort of resented her for her anxiety panic disorder attacks. I felt like she was emotionally holding my family hostage. I didn't realize that anxiety panic attacks were beyond her control, or if I did realize it, I did not pay attention to that fact.

So when, around the age of 25 I developed anxiety panic attacks, it was a terrifying experience. Suddenly, I realized what mortal terror was. When you have an anxiety panic attack, you can't do anything. You can't think, you can't act, you can't control your thoughts and emotions. Sometimes, you are so completely overwhelmed that you can lose control of your own behavior. Losing that kind of control is a truly terrifying experience.

Fortunately, there are more treatments for anxiety panic attacks than there were when my mother first got her symptoms. First of all, of course, there are anxiety support groups. These are a great way of dealing with the difficulty that anxiety panic attacks place on your life. People in your support group are really the only people who can surely understand you. Aside from that, the drugs have gotten much better. Anxiety treatment is better than it has ever been before, and every year they seem to be coming out with new drugs.

Aside from drugs, however, there are some pretty interesting and novel treatments. There is therapy of course, and there is also hypnosis. You hear very different things about the effectiveness of hypnosis in treating anxiety panic attacks. Some people swear by it, but others aren't so sure. So far, I have had some positive results with it, but it is too soon to tell.

Safe Weight Loss Pills

There are so many people that want to shed a few excess pounds of body fat. Both women and men all across America share this desire, and many of them struggle with it s well. The simple truth is, it can be difficult to lose unwanted weight. This is why there are so many weight loss supplements and diet pills gracing the market these days. No matter where you turn, you will likely see another new program, product, or formula that makes claims to assist with weight reduction. If only it were so easy to determine which one is right for you. Once thing everyone needs to know is that certain weight loss products need to be avoided, and can lead to certain health problems.

Where are the safe weight loss pills? This is an excellent question that must be addressed seriously. As you may already know, some diet drugs and supplement capsules contain ingredients that are harmful to the human body in several ways. Therefore you must be careful before taking any diet drugs of any kind. Alli is an example of a safe weight loss pill that has been approved by the FDA. Having said that, this does not mean that Alli is right for every man or woman. For instance, if you have certain health conditions, you are likely not allowed to take this weight reduction product. Some of these health afflictions are diabetes, liver disease, and high blood pressure.

While there are a lot of dangerous diet products at your disposal today, there are not as many safe weight loss pills. Once way to determine how safe a product or supplement is is by examining the core ingredients that are claimed to aid with weight loss or fat burning. One key component you should be on the lookout for is Ephedrine or Ephedra. This is a key ingredient that is claimed to boost the user's core heat of metabolic rates. Unfortunately it has some pretty extreme side effects, and is not approved by the FDA. You also need to be sure any supplements you take do not contain ingredients you are allergic to. This can cause major health problems.

Speak with your doctor about safe weight loss pills. This is always a smart idea before you actually begin taking a diet supplement to drop unwanted body weight. A licensed physician can tell you which over-the-counter of prescription diet pills are right for you and your individual needs. While some men and women are striving to drop 20 pounds, others are trying to lose 100 or more. These different conditions call for the use of different weight loss products. Although the goal is to shed unwanted weight, it is best to be safe first.

What Causes Cellulite

Add Comment
If you’re self conscious about the “cottage cheese skin” that’s ruining your complexion, you don’t have to worry because you’re not the only one. Both men and women deal with unattractive cellulite, or adiposis edematosa that tends to pop up around the abdomen, pelvic region and thighs, but cellulite is unfortunately more common in women because women have more fat tissue. The cottage cheese texture comes from little deposits of fat that are plainly visible because they are close to the surface of the skin. There are 3 types of cellulite based on its presentation. Grade 1 is the mildest, in which there are just changes in cells. Grade 2 is diagnosed when the skin looks pasty and the fat is lower temperature and less elastic. Grade 3 is the worst because it’s Grade 2 in addition to the skin being rough.
But what causes cellulite to form in the first place? Many people are horrified when they first discover those little lumps that seemingly manifested out of nowhere. What did they do wrong to deserve this? They want to know what causes cellulite so that they can stop whatever it is. However, the cause of cellulite is more complex than just faulty actions. According to current research, a specific occurrence isn’t what causes cellulite—what causes cellulite is an interaction of both biological and environmental factors. Biological factors that may contribute to cellulite are hormones and genetics. Hormones like estrogen and insulin are thought to help form cellulite, and some people may be genetically predisposed to developing cellulite with characteristics like slow metabolism and impaired blood circulation. Environmental factors have to do with what you eat and what you wear. You’re more likely to have cellulite if you eat foods high in fat, sodium and carbs, or too low in fiber, if you smoke, if you don’t exercise or don’t move for long periods of time, or if you wear tight clothing.
There are no known ways to get rid of cellulite, but people have tried many things. Some people turn to massages or drugs that are thought to smooth out the fat deposits. Other people wear special clothing that squeezes the skin for the same purpose. Some think that getting liposuction or going on a diet might reduce cellulite. The truth is that there’s no proof to support any of these methods.

However, people might be on to something when they look to their diets. It seems that the best way to prevent cellulite is to eat healthy in addition to exercising and reducing stress. In general, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is good for you so people would do well to exercise often and watch what they eat.

Muscle Building Supplements

Packing on pounds of muscle mass is much easier to do these days. While men used to chug a dozen raw eggs each day to get their additional protein, now there are muscle building supplements that can do the trick. A lot really has to do with what your goals are, and how much additional lean muscle mass you are striving to pack on. One you decide this, you can proceed to check out the plethora of muscle building supplements currently gracing the market these days. Many of these you can find in nutrition stores, superstores, grocery stores and even drugstores at this point. This is because protein has become all the rage. More and more people are consuming supplements as meal alternatives and snack foods to curb cravings.

If you haven't tried any muscle building supplements lately, you are in for a surprise. The truth is there are countless shake powders, bars, beverages, and snacks at your disposal, and the majority of them focus on low carbs and high protein. Again, it is crucial to keep in mind what you are trying to accomplish. If your goal is to pack on about 10 pounds of muscle mass, then it is wise to check out the muscle building supplements that offer high amounts of calories, low portions of fat, and high levels of good protein. Often it is recommended that people use whey protein for muscle building. This is a protein taken from cheese, and it is well known for assisting with muscle gain. Naturally it is imperative to embrace weight training as well.

Other muscle building supplements you should consider are L-Glutamine and amino acid compilations. There are plenty of supplement formulas available that provide essential amino acids. These are building blocks for muscle. L-Glutamine in particular encourages the body to burn off fat before it attacks muscle tissue as an energy source. However, it is wise to speak with your physician before taking any of these muscle building supplements just to be on the safe side. After all, many individuals with prior health conditions cannot take some supplements.

Don't overdo it! If you are interested in taking supplement formulas that improve you muscle mass, be sure you keep track of everything you're taking. You certainly do not want to overdo muscle building supplements such as creatine. This substance should only be taken in moderation and with large quantities of water each day. This is to ensure that it keeps your digestive tract flushed out. Any time you take any supplement formulas for weight loss or muscle gain, it is imperative to understand any and all potential side effects. So be sure to get all the facts before taking anything.

What you need to know about emergency dentistry

Add Comment
Who likes going to the dentist? I didn't see many hands going up! Well, modern dentistry has gained the dentist a better following of patients who aren't stricken with fear as they sit down in the chair. Technology has made dental procedures more comfortable and not quite so painful as some of us older folks remember as children visiting the dentist's office. Nonetheless, the need for emergency dentistry is bound to pop up sooner or later. Kids can fall off their bike and crack a tooth. An old filling comes out and you've got an exposed root that you feel immediately, to your great distress. You want to be prepared to deal with a tooth that's screaming for relief at midnight, when the dentist's office is closed. Here are a few suggestions on how to deal with the emergency dentistry situation, no matter the time of day or night.

Always keep a vial of oil of cloves in your medicine cabinet. Should you wake up in the wee hours with a terrible pain in a tooth, your vial of oil of cloves will provide immediate relief. With a cotton swab, apply a drop or two of the clove oils to the base of the tooth. Cloves helps deaden the pain and is also antiseptic. This treatment will see you through 'til morning when the dentist opens.

n the case of an abscess developing, you'll need a fresh clove of garlic in your cupboard at all times. When the abscess starts to hurt, cut a couple of thin slices of fresh garlic and position it along the gums of that tooth. Garlic is an effective natural antibiotic, which will help reduce the inflammation, as well as the pain. This remedy may reduce the implications and severity of the procedures the dentist may use in emergency dentistry.

If you have dental insurance, check before you need to know to determine what policies and procedures your insurer follows. For example, your insurance may only cover emergency procedures and may not pay for a root canal or other procedure that will save the tooth. Limited insurance policies may only pay for the extraction of the tooth. If you have a policy like this and want to save the tooth, the cost will be paid out of your own pocket. Discuss the situation with your dentist, prior to needing emergency dentistry. Ask if they have a payment program, or sliding fee scale. It's much better to know up front what you might be looking at, rather than being surprised in addition to being in pain!

Being well prepared for a dental emergency may radically change the outcome. Do be sure to get that checkup every 6 months, so you might more readily avoid such painful emergency dentistry.

Kidney Stones Treatment

Kidney stones treatment can be both time-consuming and excruciating, but given the pain and day-to-day discomfort of the kidney stones themselves, most feel kidney stones treatment is worthwhile and beneficial. It's not worth it to suffer the pain of the condition when kidney stones treatment can cut that suffering fivefold or more.
Kidney stones themselves aren't actually stones, but are a crystalization of the minerals found in urine. This crystalization, called "calculi", happens in the urinary tract, which of course includes the kidneys.

Typically, kidney stones will be passed in your urine. Many - perhaps even most - stones will be passed without causing any noticeable symptoms at all. It's only when they when they grow to a large enough size, say one-fifth of a centimeter, that they cause a blockage in the urinary tract and the pain onset begins. The pain comes from a stretching of the ureter, the area in your body where urine is stored before it is passed.

The pain is severe, and surprisingly difficult to pinpoint. Kidney stones will cause pain in the groin, obviously, but also in the sides and in your lower abdomen. Any and or all of those can be symptom, or in rare cases, you could have a-symptomatic pain shooting down your left or right leg as a result of kidney stones.

There are also non pain-related symptoms such as blood in the urine, which will usually be visible to the naked eye if the condition is severe enough. The blood is caused by the kidney stone literally tearing the inside walls of your urinary tract.

Kidney stones treatment can be done with drugs, homeopathy or, or course, surgery. Most kidney stones will be small enough to be passed naturally; often times without the person passing the stone even knowing that there was one. However, when they get larger then surgery may be necessary. This comes with its own host of problems, not the least of which is the healing process which can be as painful as the stone itself. More on this can be found at any number of websites, and of course, you can always talk to your doctor for a more thorough explanation.

Even better than treatment, though, is prevention. As the old saying goes, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." In this case, the main prevention is drinking plenty of water. Drink enough to pass at least two liters of water a day. Avoid eating too much protein. And, as always, avoid processed foods and drinks.

Inpatient drug rehab

Add Comment
Inpatient drug rehab is what many consider the "last step" for dealing with a loved one who's suffering from a substance abuse program. Unlike an intervention, or prescription therapy, inpatient drug rehab is a 24-hours-a-day solution for a problem, or even a disease, if you like, that itself is manifest 24 hours a day.
Addicts are people who need help, and they need help near constantly. Some drug rehab programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, aim to provide a structure based upon weekly meetings and a mantra of self-assurance. This two-part approach has been highly effective for many, many people - including some friends of mine. The structure gives the addicts a feeling of control over their schedule, the very concept of time itself. The mantra is even more important in that it gives them a chance to feel like they control the need, rather than the need controling them.
Inpatient drug rehab is for when the above process doesn't work, or has stopped working. Inpatient drug rehab is for people who are, sometimes quite literally, on their last opportunity to turn their lives around. It is a severe but often necessary process for people who are decidedly unable to kick their habit.

Commonly, people will turn to inpatient drug rehab to help their loved ones overcome some sort of addiction. The most common is obviously substance abuse, such as heroin or cocaine, or even more common addictions such as alcohol or marijuana. Doctors and experts in the field consider substance abuse addictions amongst the hardest to overcome, simply because it works on more biological levels than, say, a sexual addiction.

Heroin, for example, not only stimulates the pleasure receptacles in your neuro net, but creates new pathways that only the drug can fill. So you get a two-edged sword of want and need. It becomes not only a mental addication - a "habit" - but a physical one that is done at first for pleasure, but soon simply for the need to just get through the day.

Any hope of long-term recovery, then, lies in breaking that second dependency and removing the patient from an environment where he or she has access to drugs. This is why so many serious drug abusers who haven't had success with other methods do have success with inpatient drug rehab. This is why inpatient drug rehab is considered by most in the field to be the best, and most certain method of treating substance abusers or addicts of all stripes.

Paranoid Personality Disorder

Add Comment
Sometimes we might be walking alone in the night, and it looks like there are scary looking figures in the distance, or we could swear that we heard footsteps behind us. But then you turn around, and there’s no one there, and when you reach the figures they’re really just trees and bushes. It’s normal to get paranoid or suspicious once in a while, especially when you’re in a potentially scary or dangerous situation. Our bodies are wired to experience fear in danger—our sympathetic nervous system, the “flight or fight” mechanism, gets our heartbeat going, our blood pressure increasing, our pores sweating, our pupils dilating, prompts that feeling they refer to as “the hairs standing on the back of your neck.” This is a natural, biological fear response and it induces us to take action like running away, putting our guard up, or getting ready to fend off the threat. Who knows what could happen when it’s all dark and no one’s around in sight.

Fear doesn’t only arise from things that go bump in the night. Sometimes we get afraid even when people are around us. There have been times where we were self-conscious and felt like everyone was judging us, or suspecting others of talking behind our backs. These are also normal feelings because everyone has the need to be accepted. However, it’s not normal when this fear persists even in benign situations. Paranoid personality disorder is when individuals are constantly suspicious about others hurting or plotting against them. Some symptoms of paranoid personality disorder are persistent suspicion of others, hostility, oversensitivity, being self-centered, and interpreting normal situations with other people as threatening. Understandably, having paranoid personality disorder results in social isolation and in some cases a person can become violent towards others.

It’s difficult for people with paranoid personality disorder to form relationships because they are unwilling to let their guard down, should other people use that vulnerability against them. This can affect how others treat them, which in turn validates their paranoid beliefs and reinforces them in a vicious cycle. A person with paranoid personality disorder is unlikely to seek help due to suspicion of it, but in the case that they do, the options consist of therapy and medication, as for other mental and personality disorders. The reluctance to seek help contributes to an under-diagnosis of the condition and allows people to continue suffering from it chronically.

Going Vegetarian during your Pregnancy

Add Comment
Now that you’re pregnant, you’re wondering if your decision to become vegetarian can still be carried out successfully during your pregnancy. And while it is possible for you to obtain all the nutrients your body will need during pregnancy through a well-planned, nutrient-dense vegetarian diet, careful planning and observation will be crucial to your overall success transitioning to vegetarianism during your pregnancy. In other words: take it slow and be smart!

A good vegetarian diet has a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, lentils, and nuts and some eggs and dairy or their equivalent if you so choose. Fast food, highly processed junk foods, and canned fruits and vegetables are eaten rarely if at all. It’s imperative that you make wise food choices at this crucial time, since a pregnant woman only needs approximately 300 more calories per day and about 10-16 extra grams of protein; however, the body's need for certain nutrients increases significantly. Every bite you take is important when you're pregnant. While the RDAs (recommended daily allowances) for almost all nutrients increase, especially important are folic acid, iron, zinc, and vitamin B-12. Attention to adequate amounts of vitamin B-12 is crucial for vegetarians who choose not to eat eggs and dairy.

Work closely with your healthcare professional during this transition. The changeover from a meat-eating to a vegetarian diet can be rough on your body as it actually goes through a detoxification process during the transition. So, you want to ensure your baby is getting all the nutrients it needs at this time, and is growing and developing at a healthy rate. Start very slowly; perhaps only one or two days per week eating a vegetarian diet. Gradually work in soy- and plant-based proteins into your diet, and little by little use them to replace proteins obtained from eating meat products. Be sure to adequately supplement your diet with a quality prenatal supplement, and get adequate amounts of exercise and exposure to sunlight to promote your body to naturally produce vitamin D.

With careful planning, observation, and your healthcare professional’s guidance, the transition to vegetarianism during your pregnancy can be a cleansing and healthy start for both you and your baby to a lifetime of optimal health.

Fish and mercury

Add Comment
Many people think if they just eliminate red meat and poultry from their diets, their eating healthier. This is partly true, but there are hazards to eating fish and seafood as well. The harm that humans have done to the environment has had a direct effect on the fish and seafood we eat.

There are elements of fish and shellfish are an important part of a healthy diet. Fish and shellfish contain high-quality protein and other essential nutrients, are low in saturated fat, and contain omega-3 fatty acids. A well-balanced diet that includes a variety of fish and shellfish can contribute to heart health and children's proper growth and development. So, women and young children in particular should include fish or shellfish in their diets due to the many nutritional benefits.
However, nearly all fish and shellfish contain traces of mercury. For most people, the risk from mercury by eating fish and shellfish is not a health concern. Yet, some fish and shellfish contain higher levels of mercury that may harm an unborn baby or young child's developing nervous system. The risks from mercury in fish and shellfish depend on the amount of fish and shellfish eaten and the levels of mercury in the fish and shellfish. Therefore, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are advising women who may become pregnant, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children to avoid some types of fish and eat fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury.

Is this anyway to eat? In fear of what unhealthy elements are lurking in the food we eat? Eliminating red meat and eating a more vegetarian diet is an excellent start on the road to more healthy eating. Eliminating fish and seafood is one of the final steps towards eating a complete vegetarian diet and the health benefits that are your reward for making that change.

Sample Vegetarian Diet Including Essential Fatty Acids to Promote Healing

Add Comment
Fats are an essential part of any well-balanced diet, including a vegetarian diet. Fats are made of smaller units - called fatty acids. These fatty acids may be saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. Saturated and monounsaturated fats are not necessary in a vegetarian diet as they can be made in the human body. However, two polyunsaturated fatty acids - linoleic acid (omega 6) and linolenic acid (omega 3) - cannot be manufactured by the body and must be provided in the diet.

Fortunately, they are widely available in vegetarian/vegan plant foods. Evidence is increasing that omega 6 (found in foods like vegetable oils such as corn, safflower and sesame) and especially omega 3 (found in flax, walnuts, avocados, almonds and olive and canola oil) fats are beneficial for a range of conditions, including heart disease, cancer, immune system deficiencies and arthritis.

Healthy fats and oils play active roles in every stage of the body’s healing, building, and maintenance processes. In fact, they are as important to an active individual’s body as amino acids, minerals, and vitamins. Healthy fats and oils help convert light and sound into electrical nerve impulses, remove potentially toxic substances from sensitive tissue, and provide strength to cell membranes.

The following vegetarian menu sample shows how easy it is for essential fatty acids to be a part of your every day vegetarian diet.

Breakfast:
1 bagel with 2 tsp vegan margarine, 1 medium orange, 1 cup Cheerios cereal, and 1 cup soymilk

Lunch:
Sandwich of hummus made with 3/4 cup chickpeas and 2 teaspoons tahini (a sandwich spread made from ground sesame seeds) on 2 slices of whole wheat bread with 3 slices of tomato and ½ sliced avocado

Dinner:
1 cup of cooked pasta with 1/4 cup marinara sauce, 1/3 cup carrot sticks, 1 cup cooked broccoli (frozen or fresh), and 1 whole wheat roll

Snack:
1/2 cup almonds, and 1 cup soymilk

Nourishing our Body, Nourishing our Spirit

Add Comment
Many times our choice to become vegetarian isn’t only for health, environmental, or economical reasons, but also spiritual. There is a heartfelt connection between vegetarianism and the deeper side of nourishment. We must learn to nourish ourselves not only physically, but also spiritually.

The subject of nutrition is not simply a question of the food we eat at meals. Besides nutrients, foods contain scents, colors and invisible particles that attract pure light, light that is so essential for our joyful life and well-being. The choice we make is therefore always of consequential significance.

Grains, fruits and vegetables naturally grow and flourish in sunlight, and you could deduce they are actually their own form of light. In order to develop the qualities of the heart, we must eat not only peacefully, but consciously. Therefore it makes sense to consume food that is nourished by sunlight. As a result, our emotions and our essence are illuminated and nourished as well.

It’s long been said that your body is your temple and everything that enters that temple has a direct result in who we become. Therefore, when we choose to nourish our bodies with healthful, nutrient-dense plant foods from the earth, we are in turn nourishing our souls, our spirit, and our being. The quality of your food and its physical properties not only transforms our emotions and mind, but can actually change your appearance and personality.

By focusing our diet on fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season and organically produced, we are in turn connecting with nature and learning to live in harmony with it. By committing and devoting ourselves to a vegetarian lifestyle, we’ve also committed to nourishing our souls and our inner well-being. You can’t ask for a more perfect health food than that!

Putting your Vegetarian Toddler on the Fast Track to Health

Add Comment
Though many people have the idea that feeding a toddler a vegetarian diet isn’t safe, so long as parents take care to make sure that all the appropriate nutrients are met, it’s actually quite healthy. Some benefits to a lifelong, proper vegetarian diet include a lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

The main problem with vegetarianism and toddler nutrition is making sure your child gets enough nutrients and calories. Calorie consumption is important for ensuring your toddler has the energy he needs to play hard and grow.

It can be challenging to develop a well-rounded vegetarian toddler menu that provides enough protein and iron. Since toddlers already have such a small appetite, it can be difficult to get them to eat enough vegetables or beans to receive all of their nutrients. Therefore, it is important that vegetarian children are served nutrient-dense foods.

Soybeans and tofu are a great source of protein for adults and children over four. For toddlers, though, it shouldn’t be used as their main source of protein. In this instance, compliment the tofu or soybeans that you serve with soymilk that has been fortified with vitamins and minerals. Not only will this help provide some protein, it will also help your toddler’s nutrition by providing calcium, and vitamins A and D, which can often be hard to get in a vegan diet.

Iron can be found in many vegetarian-friendly foods. Kidney beans, lima beans, green beans, and spinach are all excellent sources of iron. However, unlike iron derived from animal sources, iron from vegetables can be hard for your body to absorb properly. But serving a vitamin C rich food with those beans or spinach can make the iron easier for your toddler to absorb. Some great sources of vitamin C include tomatoes, oranges, broccoli, red peppers, and cantaloupe.

While it is possible to raise a healthy vegan, it can take a bit more work. You may need to supplement your toddler’s diet to ensure they get all the nutrition that they need. Vitamin B-12 can be especially difficult for vegans to get enough of. While vegetables contain some B-12 vitamins, the body does not easily absorb these. Your toddler’s healthcare provider can help you decide on a B-12 suitable for toddlers.

A diet that does not allow for calcium can also be detrimental to your child’s health. Calcium helps to make bones stronger and aids in proper growth and development. Choose soymilk that is calcium-fortified, but be sure it’s also fortified with other nutrients that your toddler needs for good nutrition.

Seven natural, effective eczema treatments: these work!

If you suffer from eczema, you've probably spent a lot of time and money on doctor's visits and expensive medications without results. Here we've got seven natural, old-time eczema treatments that don't cost an arm and a leg and are quite effective.
1.1.Echinacea is an herb best known as a cold preventative, blood cleanser and immune system booster. However, a little known benefit of Echinacea is that even long-standing cases of eczema respond well to Echinacea tablets (available at health food stores) within several days.
2.Amaranth tea is another effective eczema treatment. Here's the formula: you'll need two teaspoons of amaranth seeds and, if available, 1 teaspoon of amaranth leaves. Bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting, add the amaranth seeds and simmer for five minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and add the leaves. Steep for 30 minutes. (If you can't find the leaves, don't worry – it's not essential, but does increase the effectiveness.) When cool, use as a wash, twice daily.
3.Here's another natural eczema treatment which, while being a bit unusual, is highly effective. For each treatment, combine one tablespoon of peeled, raw, grated potato with 2/3 teaspoon of uncooked, granulated quick-cooking tapioca. Add just enough water to make a thick, sticky paste. Spread the paste on several layers of gauze and fasten to the affected area with medical adhesive tape. Change every day, repeating until relief is obtained.
4.Watercress tea for an eczema treatment? You bet! Thoroughly wash 1 large bunch of watercress and place in a stainless steel saucepan, with just sufficient water to cover the greens. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat, simmering slowly until the watercress is quite tender. Strain the cress well, through a few layers of cheesecloth and refrigerate. Bathe the affected area(s) a few times each day, with a piece of soft cloth. For comfort's sake, a soft linen works best.

5.Would you believe that horseradish root can treat eczema? Yes, indeed and quite effectively. Grate a 3-4 inch piece of fresh horseradish root, put it into a glass bottle and cover with apple cider vinegar. Set the covered jar on a sunny window ledge for 10 days. Strain the horseradish root out and refrigerate the remaining liquid. For each application, dilute the vinegar with equal parts of water and apply daily.

6. Some cases of eczema respond well to warm water combined with a couple of teaspoons of blackstrap molasses. Soak the affected area frequently in this bath each day. In addition to the soaking, take a teaspoon of molasses by mouth, several times a day. Note that diabetics should not use this treatment!
7. Our last natural eczema treatment is for dry eczema only, as it will make weeping eczema worse! Take 1 capsule of propolis twice daily, for 3-4 days, then follow up with one application of the propolis cream daily, until the eczema is relieved. (Propolis capsules and cream are available at health food stores.) Note that about 1 in every 2,000 persons have an allergic reaction to propolis. Should you develop a rash, discontinue use. The rash will disappear upon discontinuing the propolis.
You'll surely agree that eczema is no fun! One of these natural eczema treatments will work well for you and you'll save time and money, too!

Sample Menu Items for your Growing Vegetarian Toddler

Vegetarian child. The term almost sounds like an oxymoron we’ve joked about through the years, like jumbo shrimp. The words just don’t seem to go together! It's not as unnatural as it may sound. Actually, kids are almost natural vegetarians. It’s imperative that you offer your growing vegetarian child a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and soy based proteins to ensure they have the energy and nutrients needed to grow up strong, healthy, and happy. Consider including items in your daily menu planning for a well-rounded, nutrient-dense healthy diet:

2.5-3 cups fortified soymilk
1/4-1/2 cup iron-fortified cereal
2-5 servings grains (1/2 slice bread, 1/4 cup cooked rice, pasta, quinoa, etc)
2-3 servings veggies (1/2 cup salad or raw veggies, 1/4 cup cooked veggies—bear in mind that the younger your child is, cooked vegetables might be easier for them to chew and digest, then introduce raw veggies as they grow older.)

2-3 servings fruit (1/2 fresh fruit, 1/4 cup cooked fruit, 1/4 cup juice)

2 servings protein foods (1/4 -1/3 cup cooked beans/lentils, a slice or so of calcium-fortified tofu, or peanut or almond butter – be sure that nut butters are fed to children who’ve been tested and shown not to have nut allergies; if you’re unsure, wait until your child’s healthcare provider has had the opportunity to test for such allergies in your child before trying them)

Vitamin B-12 source - nutritional yeast, breast milk, formula, fortified soy milks and cheeses
Vitamin D - sunlight, breast milk, formula, fortified soy milk
Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids - flaxseed oil, freshly ground flaxseed
And here’s some finger-food friendly options for your growing vegetarian toddler:

Fresh or frozen mango
Fresh or frozen peaches/nectarines/plums
Cubed avocado
Tofu (put in microwave or steam for 10-30 seconds
Fresh or frozen peas
Pasta that is slightly overcooked
Cubed soy or rice cheeses
Canned beans- black, garbanzo, black eyed peas, or kidney
Toast, cut into little pieces

Variety is the Spice of your Vegetarian Child’s Diet

Add Comment
Eating habits are set in early childhood. Choosing a vegetarian diet can give your child—and your whole family—the opportunity to learn to enjoy a variety of wonderful, nutritious foods. Offer your child a wide variety of grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and soy products, keep it simple and make it fun, and they’ll learn good eating habits that will last them a lifetime.

Children raised on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes grow up to be slimmer and healthier and even live longer than their meat-eating friends. It is much easier to build a nutritious diet from plant foods than from animal products, which contain saturated fat, cholesterol, and other substances that growing children can do without. As for essential nutrients, plant foods are the preferred source because they provide sufficient energy and protein packaged with other health-promoting nutrients such as fiber, antioxidant vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.

The complex carbohydrates found in whole grains, beans, and vegetables provide the ideal energy to fuel a child’s busy life. Encouraging the consumption of brown rice, whole wheat breads and pastas, rolled oats, and corn, as well as the less common grains barley, quinoa, millet, and others, will boost the fiber and nutrient content of a child’s diet. In addition, it will help steer children away from desiring sugary sweet drinks and treats.

And though children need protein to grown, they don’t need high-protein, animal-based foods. Different varieties of grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits supplies plenty of protein, making protein deficiency very unlikely.

Very young children need a bit more healthy fats in their diets than their parents. Healthier fat sources include soybean products, avocados, and nut butters. Parents will want to make sure their child’s diet includes a regular source of vitamin B-12, which is needed for healthy nerve function and blood. Vitamin B-12 is abundant in many commercial cereals, fortified soy and rice milks, and nutritional yeast. Growing children also need iron found in a variety of beans and green, leafy vegetables and when coupled with the vitamin C in fruits and vegetables, iron absorption is enhanced.

Remembering the Reasons for a Vegetarian Season

Add Comment
Christmas is a season of peace, love and harmony. It’s a time that brings families and friends together to reconnect and find comfort and happiness being together. It’s also about respect for fellow man, appreciating and embracing one another’s differences. Take some time over the holiday season to reflect on the reasons for your choice to become vegetarian, and enforce your commitment and dedication to the vegetarian lifestyle. What reason, or reasons, helped you decide that vegetarianism was the right choice for you?

Was it Economic? A meat-based diet can be very expensive. Fresh produce bought in season can be very affordable, and can be prepared (dried, canned, frozen) so that it can be enjoyed later in the season.
Was it Ethical? Did you choose not to eat meat because of the meat processing techniques are incredibly cruel to animals? Do some research on the internet or the library, visit the PETA website, and you’re very likely to find more credible reasoning that affirms your choice.

Was it Environmental? A vegetarian lifestyle is more environmentally friendly – large ranching operations cause topsoil erosion, coyotes and other natural predators are destroyed routinely to protect herds of cows which are only slaughtered anyway later on, and commercial fishing operations are damaging the ocean’s ecosystems.

Was it to Improve Your Health? Eating a vegetarian diet has been shown to be a very healthy lifestyle, as it helps fight heart disease, reduces cancer risks, lowers cholesterol, helps lower blood sugar and reverse the effects of diabetes, lowers the obesity risk, and reduces the risk of osteoporosis, as meat consumption has been shown to promote bone loss.

And remember: just because it’s Christmas, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy many of the same wonderful holiday treats you’ve become accustomed to, as long as they are prepared with your vegetarian lifestyle in mind. Breads, cookies prepared with vegetable shortening, egg substitutes, whole grain flours and soymilks, numerous choices for vegetable dishes and salads can all be enjoyed by both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike during the holiday! So remember the reason for the season, reaffirm your reasoning for your life choice, and be proud of it, and of yourself.

Ideas for Adding some Variety to your Vegetarian Lifestyle

When you’re planning a healthy vegetarian diet, you’re only limited by your imagination. It’s important to incorporate a wide variety of whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits in different meals, including seeds and nuts. Variety is the spice of life, and it will help ensure your vegetarian diet is nutrient-dense, interesting, and fun! Aim for variety, even when you serve favorite entrees over and over again, by serving different side dishes, snacks and desserts.

Be creative in planning meals. Boost your consumption of beans and vegetables by eating these foods at lunch time rather than just for dinner. Make it a goal to serve a vegetable every day for lunch and two for dinner. Plan a meal around a vegetable. A baked potato can be a hearty entree; serve it with baked beans, a sauce of stewed tomatoes or a few tablespoons of salsa. Or make a simple meal of sautéed vegetables and pasta.
Try new foods often. Experiment with a variety of grains such as quinoa, couscous, bulgur, barley, and wheat berries. Try fruits and vegetables that are popular in different international cuisines, such as bok choy. Accentuate the positive. Focus more on healthy foods that fit into a vegetarian plan instead of foods to avoid. If you’re unsure how to include a new food into your vegetarian diet, ask the produce manager at your local grocer or health food store for ideas on how to prepare it. The internet can be a great resource for new recipe and preparation ideas. But be sure that you’re building your menu on a strong plant food base. Make them the core of your diet.

Don’t stress about getting enough protein. As long as calories are sufficient and the diet is varied, vegetarians easily meet protein needs. Grains, beans, vegetables, and nuts all provide protein. Vegetarians do not need to eat special combinations of foods to meet protein needs. However, it is important to be aware of fat. Even vegetarians can get too much fat if the diet contains large amounts of nuts, oils, processed foods, or sweets.

Get a Healthy Glow with Organic Skin Care Products

Have you ever looked at the ingredients label on your favorite bottle of moisturizer or foundation? Chances are, the list contains lots of chemicals that are practically impossible to pronounce. Have you ever wondered what kind of long-term effects these chemicals can have on your face? I have, which is why I switched to organic skin care products about a year ago. Now my face has a healthy glow that makes me look years younger and far healthier than ever!
My friends have noticed the difference, and asked me to share my secret. I told them about my new regimen that consists of only organic skin care products, thinking they would immediately share my enthusiasm. I was therefore surprised to see my revelation met with a bit of skepticism. Apparently, my friends had tried some items marked "all-natural", but didn't get the results they were after. After asking them a few follow-up questions, it seems that they weren't really using the right brands. Because it's so trendy to be natural these days, many manufacturers are decorating their packaging with pretty flowers adding a touch of herbal extract, and marketing their stuff as organic skin care products. Obviously that's not what I meant!
In order to find the best organic skin care products, it's essential that you do some research first. If you have a beauty consultant or esthetician that you regularly see at the salon or spa, then she can probably start you out with some great recommendations. This would be the best route, since the person is already familiar with your skin and any specific issues (such as oiliness or dryness) that you might have. Also, your regular esthetician is likely to be aware of your general budget and how much you usually spend on beauty creams or whatnot, so she'll be able to recommend a product that you can afford.
If you don't have a consultant, then you can just do some online research. Take inventory of your usual beauty supplies first, and then try to find organic skin care products to replace the ones you use. This could be anything from moisturizer to cold cream, wrinkle cream, toner, cleanser, serum, makeup, and even bath gels. Once you figure out which items you want to buy, go ahead and check for some organic skin care products that have a good reputation among consumers. There are lots of customer review websites and beauty-related message boards where people can offer their personal opinions and experiences with a particular product, and these are often wonderful places to find unbiased information.
Switching to organic skin care products can help you start looking your very best. If you haven't gone all natural yet, then you could be doing more damage to your face than good. Make the change today!

Treatment For ADHD

Parents always want the best for their children, and they never want to think that something may be wrong that needs medical attention. Sadly, children get sick with the flu and can be in the hospital because of it, some get cancer and need treatment, and some end up with a diagnosis of autism. All of these things can be life changing events. Some children end up with ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This is not something that is usually life threatening, but it does require a child to undergo treatment for ADHD if they want to lead a somewhat normal life.

Some children are naturally bright and active. There is nothing wrong with this. For years, ADHD was unknown, and then after it was discovered, too many children were undergoing treatment for ADHD just because teachers or parents thought they were out of control. Today, that is not as big of a worry. Most teachers and parents are careful then they think about ADHD and the treatment that comes with it. Doctors run thorough tests before they diagnose and begin treatment for ADHD. The years of slapping hard to deal with children with the ADHD label because no one knows what else to do with them are mostly over.

Take that knowledge with you if you feel that you have to have your children taken in for possible treatment for ADHD. Not only are there new things to try and new medications that work much better for this type of treatment, there are new tests and various things doctors look for before they will even consider making the diagnosis of ADHD. Both parents and teachers must fill out forms about the child's behavior and report cards and other documents are also studied.

Some signs your child may have and need treatment for ADHD are very easy to spot once you think about your child and what they have done in the past and are currently doing. Children with ADHD may make friends easily, but they have a hard time keeping them. They are impulsive and often say what comes to mind without a filter. They can not sit still often and do not finish things that they start. They are usually quite unhappy and feel that everything is unfair and do not always feel like they fit in anywhere, even with their own families.

Each child who may or may not need treatment for ADHD will have different symptoms, problems, and degrees of difficulty. You won't know if your child needs intervention until you talk with a doctor. Typically, once the proper diagnosis has been made, a doctor will talk about dietary changes as well as the possibility of medications. Children should be monitored to be sure the medication is right and that everything is as good as it can be. If your doctor does not do this, it might be in your best interest to find a doctor willing to spend more time with your child so they can have the most relief from their condition as possible.

Sample Daily Menu for Pregnant Vegetarians

Though your nutritional needs increase now that you’re pregnant, your pregnancy vegetarian diet shouldn’t have to change all that much. With some careful planning to ensure your caloric, vitamin, and mineral needs are met, you can still enjoy a rich variety of nutrient-dense delicious foods and help give your baby a nutritious jump-start. Consider the following daily menu for ideas and inspiration.

Breakfast:
1/2 cup oatmeal with maple syrup
1 slice whole wheat toast with fruit spread
1 cup soy milk
1/2 cup calcium and vitamin D fortified orange juice

Snack:
1/2 whole wheat bagel with margarine
Banana

Lunch:
Veggie burger on whole wheat bun with mustard and catsup
1 cup steamed collard greens
Medium apple
1 cup soy milk

Snack:
3/4 cup ready-to-eat cereal with 1/2 cup blueberries
1 cup soy milk

Dinner:
3/4 cup tofu stir-fried with 1 cup vegetables
1 cup brown rice
Medium orange

Snack:
Whole grain crackers with 2 Tbsp peanut butter
4 ounces apple juice

If morning sickness is giving you fits during your pregnancy, try eating low fat, high carbohydrate nutrient-dense foods. These are digested more quickly and stay in the stomach for less time giving less time for queasiness. Remember to eat often. Sometimes nausea is really hunger in disguise.

Be sure to drink juice, water, or soy milk if you can't eat solid food. Keep trying to eat whatever you can. If you’re unable to eat or drink the appropriate amounts of foods or fluids for 24 hours or more, get in touch with your healthcare provider.

Tips for a Vibrant Vegetarian Holiday Filled with Variety

Add Comment
Planning a beautiful yet nutrient-dense, delicious holiday meal for both your meat eating and vegetarian guests can be a little daunting at first, but it can also bring out your creativity! Many side dishes you make can be easily made vegetarian, with little difference in taste.

The first step in planning accordingly would be to find out which of your guests are vegetarian, and what kind of vegetarian they are. Do they eat eggs or cheese? If so, you’ll have a few more possibilities. If they don’t, that’s okay, you’ll still have plenty of options to work with. If you’re new to the vegetarian lifestyle and aren’t quite sure where to start, ask for some input or help from your vegetarian guests. They may have some great recipe ideas, shortcuts, or simple tricks of the trade they can share with you to make your holiday meal preparation go smoothly.

For instance, you can substitute vegetable broth for chicken broth, or simply leave the meat or meat drippings out of vegetables and soups. This will also cut down on the fat content. It’s also very simple to divide some of the dishes, making one portion meatless, using the same vegetarian ingredients just mentioned.

Most importantly, keep in mind that the holidays are about peace, love, and understanding. With this in mind, please try not to be judgmental of what people you love choose to eat if you are not vegetarian yourself. Support your family member or friend’s choice to eat vegetarian. Seize the opportunity to learn from them. Incorporate ideas from a vegetarian lifestyle into your own to ensure your family is eating a variety nutrient-dense, delicious fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, and nuts at every meal.

Children With Special Needs

Add Comment
When you think of special needs, you may think of children that have severe emotional, mental, or physical conditions. These children need a lot of attention and care, but they are not the only ones that are in need of special attention. Some children with special needs have less visible and less debilitating problems. These children can sometimes fall through the cracks at school because teachers and even parents assume that the children just have behavior problems rather than a real issue that may delay learning and probably emotional growth. There is help out there for all children that have special needs or delays.
If your child is not doing well in school, but you are pretty sure that they should be doing better, you should think about other issues before you decide that your child is slacking or that you have a behavioral problem on your hands. At times, children with special needs go without diagnosis for small learning disabilities or even problems like bad hearing or eye sight. These things should all be considered when a child seems to be intelligent but is doing very poorly in school. Some problems are simple to clear up and make a huge difference rather quickly.
It is often not the best idea to label children as special needs, but that label does not have to be a problem. For many children with special needs, they can overcome and outgrow such problems with proper help from parents, teachers, and intervention programs. Any baby born premature is automatically referred to an early intervention program that is run by the government. This type of program is typically free to parents and gives premature children with special needs any type of help they need whether it be physical or emotional and developmental issues.
When discharged from the NICU, you should be contacted by an early intervention program in your area. Their job is to see if there is anything that you need and if you feel your child needs an evaluation. Some children come out of the hospital with very few problems, catch up to peers quickly, and no one would ever suspect they were born too early. Other children come out of the NICU as known children with special needs and parents should take advantage of each and ever program that could benefit their child. These programs address problems before they become to big to handle without a lot of intensive treatment.
If you have children with special needs but you do not know where to get help, you can talk with your pediatrician for advice and guidance. You can also call your local health department and inquire about programs in your area that may help you out. Some are free, and those that are not may be covered by your health insurance, if you have some. Don't give up until you find the help that you need for your child. These programs are out there to help them live, adjust, and thrive in the world around them.

Caged chickens and hormones

Add Comment
If most of us thought about the conditions in which chickens used for meat and eggs are raised and slaughtered, we’d become vegetarian on the spot. Egg-laying chickens can be raised in cages with 6 chickens to a cage, each chicken getting only 67 square inches of space for its lifetime.
Unless they’re certified and labeled as being free-range or organic or natural, they might have been fed growth hormones to get them to slaughter faster, and antibiotics to combat the diseases which come from being raised in cramped and less-than-clean conditions.
And consider what the recommendations are for cleaning up after touching poultry? It’s recommended to clean surfaces with bleach to remove bacteria, and to wash your hands thoroughly after touching a chicken.
Do you really want to put something into your body that requires bleach to clean up after? Something that needs to be cooked to specific temperatures to be sure you’ve destroyed any bacteria that could make you sick?
Chickens and turkeys have become so mass-produced and injected with antibiotics and hormones that there’s no taste to it anymore, so why bother? Even the most humanely treated chicken has either been stunned in a salt-water brine before being beheaded. In John Robbins excellent book and video, Diet for a Small Planet, he shows us pictures of chickens being grabbed in groups by the neck and thrown into cages. Can you really consider eating a chicken with that vision in your head?
Any means of mass-producing animals for human consumption is by its very nature unhealthy and cruel for the animals, and unhealthy for humans as well. Even if you’re of the opinion that man is a natural hunter, how natural is it to eat an animal that’s been raised in captivity and fed a diet of hormones and antibiotics?

Vegetarians and heart disease

Add Comment
No matter what your reasons for eating a more vegetarian diet, there’s no denying the obvious health benefits that are derived from the elimination of red meat from your diet. On average, vegetarians have lower levels of the blood fats, cholesterol and triglycerides than meat eaters of similar age and social status have. High levels of blood fats are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Lacto-ovo vegetarians, those who eat eggs and dairy products, which contain cholesterol-raising saturated fats and cholesterol, have higher cholesterol levels than do vegans, as those who abstain from all animal foods are called. But even among lacto-ovo vegetarians, cholesterol levels are generally lower than they are among meat eaters.

Researchers have found that older men who eat meat six or more times a week are twice as likely to die of heart disease as those who abstain from meat. Among middle-aged men, meat eaters were four times more likely to suffer a fatal heart attack, according to the study. As for women, who are partly protected by their hormones and generally develop heart disease later in life than men do, the risk of fatal heart disease has been found to be lower only among the older vegetarians. In a 1982 study of more than 10,000 vegetarians and meat eaters, British researchers found that the more meat consumed, the greater the risk of suffering a heart attack. Though eliminating meat from the diet is likely to reduce your consumption of heart-damaging fats and cholesterol, substituting large amounts of high-fat dairy products and cholesterol-rich eggs can negate the benefit. To glean the heart-saving benefits of vegetarianism, consumption of such foods as hard cheese, cream cheese, ice cream and eggs should be moderate. And the introduction of more vegetables, fruits and raw foods will definitely enhance the benefits of abstaining from eating meat.

Smoking and Breastfeeding

Add Comment
Well, New Year's is around the corner, and you can count on it that a lot of people are going to want to get on the wagon - quit smoking. And a large part of that audience is likely to be women - for various reasons. Most of them have to do with how women are somewhat better equipped to have children than men. For instance, smoking (or any kind of nicotine, actually) does not go with oral contraceptives, it brings on menopause more quickly, makes women infertile, makes their periods more troublesome, and makes breast cancer a more threatening possibility. Women can still learn to live with these risks for the most part, if it weren't for the problem of pregnancy. Breastfeeding and smoking alongside hardly makes anyone feel good, least of all the baby. Of course there is a lot of sanctimonious preaching out there that you could read up any time you want to be lectured, but let's have some practical thoughts in this area. As hard as they try, some women just can't quit. How does it help to just make them feel bad about themselves?
We could just, instead, talk about how to minimize the effects on the baby of smoking and breast-feeding at the same time. To begin with, it isn't a good idea to just stay away from breast-feeding if you wish to smoke after childbirth. Nicotine in the milk is not an ideal situation of course, but the nutrition and the resistance to disease that it helps the baby with, are certainly noted to bring on greater benefits than risks. If anything should make a nursing mother guilty, it should be quitting nursing, and not smoking alongside of it. Of course, when you are smoking and breast-feeding at the same time, the quantity of milk produced can tend towards the lower side; the quality of the milk tends to change too. Breast milk in smoking mothers tends to have less iodine, and less prolactin, a hormone that the baby needs to digest the milk properly. Lactation also tends to stop earlier.
So how do you minimize whatever risk that smoking and breastfeeding together bring? To begin with, you need to at least cut down. The smaller the smoking habit, the smaller the risk to your baby. Smoking right before breast-feeding or during it can actually be dangerous to your baby - can put a lot of nicotine in your milk. A good rule of thumb is to wait about two hours between smoke and a breast-feeding round. That's as long as it takes for the body to get rid of all the nicotine. But if you think about it, it just happens to be an unpleasant truth that recreational drugs, marijuana and the like are not to be ruled out as possibilities for breast-feeding mothers either. Among poorer mothers, this just happens to be a fact of life, whether or not we like it (actually, they say one in five pregnant women use it, how's that?). These drugs are really addictive, and they say that it can actually change the shape of the baby's brain. If a mother is able to be sober enough to observe proper cleanliness when mixing formula for the baby, that is far better than breast-feeding. Well this is what they call a dilemma - being in a position where he has to make a choice between two equally unacceptable alternatives. But that is life, isn't it?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms

Add Comment
Post traumatic stress disorder develops in individuals in the aftermath of a traumatic event. Post traumatic stress disorder is commonly associated with veterans of war, but there are a variety of events that can cause the condition to occur. People might experience post traumatic stress disorder symptoms after being held at gunpoint, or experiencing a natural disaster, or being in a car accident. There are many such occurrences that can profoundly affect an individual to the point that it interferes greatly with being able to carry on with life. Biological factors are also thought to contribute, such as genetic predisposition, temperament, and brain activity. Being genetically predisposed to depression or anxiety, having a milder personality and releasing more stress hormones in the brain can interact with traumatic events and increase the likelihood of developing PTSD. There are 3 different types: intrusive memories, emotional numbing, and hyperarousal, and a variety of post traumatic stress disorder symptoms.
Symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder having to do with intrusive memories are having recurrent flashbacks of the traumatic event or having nightmares about them. The length of flashbacks can vary from a few minutes to even a few days. Post traumatic stress disorder symptoms for emotional numbing are avoiding thoughts of the event, withdrawing from activities and relationships, feeling numb, problems with concentration and memory, and hopelessness. Lastly, signs of post traumatic hyperarousal are trouble sleeping, irritability, self destructive behavior, feelings of guilt and shame, and paranoid thoughts and behavior, such as being easily startled and having visual or auditory hallucinations.
It’s normal to experience some form of post traumatic stress disorder symptoms after trauma, but it becomes PTSD when the symptoms persist over a month or are severely interfering with daily life. Sometimes patients are reluctant to seek help because they don’t feel like reaching out, or they feel like reaching out is hopeless, or they feel ashamed for doing so. However, in the end it’s up to an individual to seek help or not. Friends and family might be aware of what you’re going through, but only you can truly understand the experience. It’s difficult to do something about the situation, but you’re the only one who really can. Professional help and outside support is exactly that—it supports you by helping you to get up, but you’re the one who has to stand on your own two feet. As they say, it takes a lot of courage and strength to seek support.

The Healing Effects a Vegetarian Diet has on your Post-Baby Body

Add Comment
The breastfeeding vegetarian diet doesn’t vary all that much from the pregnancy vegetarian diet. Protein recommendations are the same, vitamin B-12 recommendations are higher, and the recommendations for iron and calories are lower than during pregnancy. But the key in ensuring your healthy vegetarian diet is also helping you recover from the stresses of giving birth and taking care of your newborn is healthy fats.

The key is in balancing fats from a variety of foods. All foods that contain dietary fat contain a combination of fatty acids-the chemical building blocks of fat. Learning about the mixture of fatty acids in your diet will help you figure out how to choose foods with the good fats and avoid those foods that contain the bad fats.

For healthy fats, look to monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These can readily be found in a variety of vegetables, oils, and nuts, such as avocados, almonds, and olive oil. These help your body to resist attack from free radicals, which are specially formed types of atoms that can damage your body’s cells when they react with DNA or cell membranes-better than other fats and thus are less prone to stick to your arteries.

Polyunsaturated fats occur in food either as omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids. The key to eating healthy polyunsaturated fats is to maintain the right balance of omega-3 acids-found abundantly in flax, walnuts and canola oil-with omega-6 acids, found in vegetable oils such as corn, safflower and sesame.

The Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet to Diabetics

Add Comment
Diabetics must choose any food they eat very carefully, as each food choice they make has a profound impact on their overall health on a meal-to-meal basis. Diabetes affects people of all ages, both genders, from all walks of life and backgrounds. Untreated, it can cause wounds to heal slowly, infections take longer to cure, blindness, and kidney failure. Diet is one of the most important ways of controlling diabetes, and a vegetarian lifestyle with its emphasis on low fat, high fiber, and nutrient-rich foods is very complementary.

Affecting more than 30 million people worldwide, this disease inhibits the body from properly processing foods. Usually, most of the food we eat is digested and converted to glucose, a sugar which is carried by the blood to all cells in the body and used for energy. The hormone insulin then helps glucose pass into cells. But diabetics are unable to control the amount of glucose in their blood because the mechanism which converts sugar to energy does not work correctly. Insulin is either absent, present in insufficient quantities or ineffective. As a result glucose builds up in the bloodstream and leads to problems such as weakness, inability to concentrate, loss of co-ordination and blurred vision. If the correct balance of food intake and insulin isn’t maintained, a diabetic can also experience blood sugar levels that are too low. If this state continues for a prolonged period of time, it can lead to coma and even death.

Though incurable, diabetes can be successfully controlled through diet and exercise, oral medications, injections of insulin, or a combination. Instead of counting calories diabetics must calculate their total carbohydrate intake so that no less than half their food is made up of complex carbohydrates. Many diabetic vegetarians have discovered that as a result of their meatless diet, they’ve had to use insulin injections less, which gives them a feeling of power and control over their disease.

Back Pain Treatments That Work

Add Comment

It seems like more and more people are becoming afflicted with back pain. In the past it seemed like old age was a major factor due to gravity and all. However, there are countless men and women of all ages searching high and low for back pain treatments right now. A lot of this may have to do with heredity or genetics, but a lot also has to do with how you live, what activities you participate in regularly, and how you sit and stand each day. A number of children and adults that are into sports tend to injure their back in some way or another. This just goes with the territory. Once this occurs, what do you do to regain your composure and cure the back pain? There must be a way.

When it comes to many back pain treatments, there is a medication involved. Now, you must keep in mind that many or most medications have side effects. So while you are numbing the back pain, you might be wreaking havoc on another part of your body. Besides, you want to get rid of the back pain for good; not merely mask it for a brief period of time. Therefore you should look into a good chiropractor. These professionals know how to address back injuries with back pain treatments that work. The issue at hand may be that your spine is out of alignment. If this is the case, you will need to have your back put in for it to feel better. A licensed chiropractor can assist you with this. Furthermore, they can inform you of common mistakes people make that throw their backs out.

While it may seem odd, all sorts of bizarre movements can throw your back out of wack. The key is to keep your spine in alignment so that all of your limbs function properly and without causing pain. Simple things like sitting up strait in your chair, walking erect instead of hunched over, and utilizing ergonomic chairs for work can do wonders for your back. Consider the way you treat your back day-in and day-out. This is important and can keep you free from needing back pain treatments of any kind. It's all about your daily habits and routines that aid your back and spine.

Consider alternative back pain treatments like yoga and stretching. These practices can do wonders for a sore or misaligned back. When you stretch those muscles and ligaments, you enable your body or frame to fall into place better. Not only does it assist with back pain, but it additionally feels great as well. It is always a prudent idea to speak with your doctor or health care professional first to assess your individual situation, and what specific back pain treatment is necessary for you as an individual.

Vegetarians and cancer

Add Comment
You might have a general idea that eating a vegetarian diet is more healthy for you. But do you really know how much less the incidence is of certain types of cancers among vegetarians?

Vegetarian diets—naturally low in saturated fat, high in fiber, and replete with cancer-protective phytochemicals—help to prevent cancer. Large studies in England and Germany have shown that vegetarians are about 40 percent less likely to develop cancer compared to meat-eaters. In the U.S., studies of Seventh-Day Adventists, who are largely lacto-ovo vegetarians, have shown significant reductions in cancer risk among those who avoided meat. Similarly, breast cancer rates are dramatically lower in nations, such as China, that follow plant-based diets. Interestingly, Japanese women who follow Western-style, meat-based diets are eight times more likely to develop breast cancer than women who follow a more traditional plant-based diet. Meat and dairy products contribute to many forms of cancer, including cancer of the colon, breast, ovaries, and prostate.

Harvard studies that included tens of thousands of women and men have shown that regular meat consumption increases colon cancer risk by roughly 300 percent. High-fat diets also encourage the body’s production of estrogens. Increased levels of this sex hormone have been linked to breast cancer. A recent report noted that the rate of breast cancer among premenopausal women who ate the most animal (but not vegetable) fat was one-third higher than that of women who ate the least animal fat. A separate study from Cambridge University also linked diets high in saturated fat to breast cancer. One study linked dairy products to an increased risk of ovarian cancer. The process of breaking down the lactose (milk sugar) evidently damages the ovaries. Daily meat consumption triples the risk of prostate enlargement. Regular milk consumption doubles the risk and failure to consume vegetables regularly nearly quadruples the risk.

Vegetarians avoid the animal fat linked to cancer and get abundant fiber, vitamins, and phytochemicals that help to prevent cancer. In addition, blood analysis of vegetarians reveals a higher level of “natural killer cells,” specialized white blood cells that attack cancer cells.

Weight Loss Supplements that Work

Add Comment
If there is one issue that has stood the test of time, it is weight gain. As people age, they tend to have more difficulty keeping excess body fat off. This applies to both women and men. So naturally many individuals seek out weight loss supplements to assist them with shedding unwanted body fat and excess pounds they've packed on over the years. Hey, it is only natural to want to be thin and look great. However, you first need to know what weight loss pills and supplements are safe. Moreover, you really need to learn more about what method of weight reduction is right for you as an individual.
You've probably seen a number of them before. Weight loss supplements are literally all over the place nowadays. You can find them in the drugstore, they are sold online through various websites, and you can even acquire prescription weight loss drugs through a licensed medical professional. It all depends on what you are looking for and how much weight you intend to lose. The first step in finding the right weight loss supplements is visiting your doctor or possibly a nutritionist. Inquire about weight loss pills and supplement formulas in order to learn more about what ones are safe and which ones should be avoided. You should never just run out and snatch a diet drug off the shelf of a drugstore and begin taking it. It is crucial to understand what you are taking and what is in it.
One popular weight loss supplement at this time is Alli. This is not a prescription diet pill, but is rather an over-the-counter supplement that can be acquired at routine drugstores and superstores. It is primarily geared toward women and does have a few potential side effects that should be considered. On the positive end, Alli has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration, which many people appreciate. This probably one of the key selling points of Alli. It has been tested.
Anytime you seek out weight loss supplements, it is important to know your own body and any health conditions you may have. Unfortunately most diet products and weight loss pills cannot be taken if you already have existing medical concerns like high blood pressure or diabetes. If you are uncertain, make sure you speak with your doctor before taking any weight loss supplements, regardless of whether they are over the counter or not. Once you decide on a diet pill or supplement formula, check out web-based stores for the lowest prices available. It is likely that you will encounter a number of specials online that you will not find in local retail stores and drugstores. You can lose those unwanted pounds!

Babies Sleep Patterns and Concerns

Add Comment
Babies sleep a lot, though it may not seem like it when they are awake in the middle of the night wanting to play with you rather than go back to sleep. Babies do all of their growing while they are asleep and without good sleep, they can fall behind in development. Fortunately, most babies sleep as much as they are supposed to and how much sleep they are getting is not a concern. Your concern may be how to survive until they start sleeping more than a few hours at a time. Here are some things to look out for when thinking about how your baby sleeps and newborn sleep patterns.

Most newborns will only sleep a few hours at a time when they are first born and up to the first month of life, though some babies start sleeping longer soon after birth. At first, however, be prepared to get up often to feed your baby. This is typical of newborn sleep patterns for all babies. They may get up only long enough to eat and have a diaper change before they fall back asleep. You will not be so lucky. Once you are up you may have trouble falling back asleep, even when you have not had much. Take this time to do a chore or two if you can not sleep, but don't do things to get yourself too worked up and even more awake. Sleep when you can, even if it is mid afternoon.
Once baby starts to sleep for three or even four hours a time, you may think that you are finally going to get your sleep too and that they are leaving newborn sleep patterns behind. You could be very wrong. They may do this for a day or two and then go back to getting up every two hours. What you want to do is try to encourage more sleep at night and less during the day. Keep them in a quieter and darker environment at night and near people and noise while napping during the day. This helps them learn when they are to sleep more and when being awake is more welcome. It may take a while, but they will get the hang of it. Be playful during the day and business-like at night.
Soon enough, you will have the first night when you wake up and realize your baby has slept for about six hours. This will be when you baby is no longer in newborn sleep patterns. They may not do it every night after that, but you may soon find that this is the rule rather than the exception. Enjoy getting more sleep, and also look forward to more awake, alert time during the day. Once these days are upon you, you will soon forget how tired you were dealing with newborn sleep patterns. You will have all new reasons to be tired.
When you are tired, grumpy, and up for the third time in one night, remember that your baby has newborn sleep patterns for a reason. They are growing faster now than they ever will any other time in life, and they need fuel to keep up with that growth. If you have a preemie, they are going to sleep longer, but you have to wake them up to eat so they do not fall behind. Sleep means growth and maturity and eating is the reason they can keep going. The cute smiles, coos, and gurgles will make it all worthwhile. Hang in there, those days are right around the corner.

Variety Adds Vitality to your Vegetarian Meals

Add Comment
Probably one of the most perplexing thoughts a person has when they transition to vegetarianism is keeping their diet filled with a variety of fun, diverse, and nutrient-dense foods. It can sometimes feel like you’re cutting many options out since you’re no longer consuming meat, and it may seem you’re losing even more options if you’ve also decided to cut dairy and eggs from your diet as well. With a little creativity, planning, and forethought, you might be surprised how much variety you can achieve with your new vegetarian diet – perhaps even more than your meat-eating days!

There are some simple substitutions you can experiment with and use as substitutions in your favorite meat recipes. Tempeh, which is cultured soybeans with a chewy texture; tofu (freezing and then thawing gives tofu a meaty texture; the tofu will turn slightly off white in color); and wheat gluten or seitan (made from wheat and has the texture of meat; available in health food or Oriental stores) are all great items to start with.

Milk and other dairy products can also be easily replaced with vegetarian-friendly items. Try soy milk, soy margarine, and soy yogurts, which can be found in health food or Oriental food stores. You can also make nut milks by blending nuts with water and straining, or rice milks by blending cooked rice with water.

A good way to introduce beans to the diet is to use them instead of meat in favorite dishes, like casseroles and chili. Because of their many health benefits, beans should be eaten often. Some great examples are chickpeas, split peas, haricot, lentils (red, green or brown), and kidney beans.

Many nuts and seeds are available both in and out of the shell, whole, halved, sliced, chopped, raw, or roasted. Cashews, peanuts, walnuts, almonds are some easy-to-find favorites. Sunflower and sesame seeds are excellent choices for spicing up salads and other vegetable dishes.

And don’t worry that you’ll have to give up your favorite Mexican, Italian, or other favorite dishes now that you’re vegetarian. Many of them can still be enjoyed and only require slight variations. Some popular and easily convertible dishes include: pasta with tomato sauce, bean burritos, tacos, tostadas, pizza, baked potatoes, vegetable soups, whole grain bread and muffins, sandwiches, macaroni, stir-fry, all types of salad, veggie burgers with French fries, beans and rice, bagels, breakfast cereals, pancakes, and waffles just to name a few. The freezer sections of most big grocery stores carry an assortment of vegetarian convenience foods such as veggie bacon, burgers, and breakfast sausages.

So get in the kitchen and let your creativity lead the way! You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised just how much more variety your diet will have as a result.

Special care must be taken when planning a vegetarian diet

Add Comment
Special care must be taken when planning a vegetarian diet to ensure proper amounts of nutrients are included daily. Nutrients such as protein, iron, calcium, zinc and vitamins B-12 and D can all be easily incorporated into your vegetarian lifestyle with the proper planning. Here are some guidelines to consider when you are planning your weekly shopping trip and organizing your weekly menu.

Plant proteins alone can provide enough of the essential and non-essential amino acids, as long as sources of dietary protein are varied and caloric intake is high enough to meet energy needs. Whole grains, legumes, vegetables, seeds and nuts all contain both essential and non-essential amino acids. Soy proteins, such as soy milk and tofu, have been shown to be equal to proteins of animal origin.

Vegetarians may have a greater risk of iron deficiency than non-vegetarians. Dried fruits and beans, spinach, and brewer's yeast are all good plant sources of iron.
Vitamin B-12 can be found in some fortified breakfast cereals and soy beverages, some brands of brewer’s yeast as well as vitamin supplements. Read the labels of other foods carefully; you might be surprised what food is B-12 fortified.

As a vegetarian, it’s essential that you have a reliable source of vitamin D, in your diet. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light stimulates your body produce its own vitamin D. Daytime outdoor exercise and working in your garden are both great alternatives for obtaining this important nutrient. Those who don’t have the opportunity to get out and soak up the sun might want to consider adding a supplement to their diet.

Recent studies suggest that vegetarians absorb and retain more calcium from foods than their non-vegetarian counterparts. Vegetable greens such as spinach, kale and broccoli, and some legumes and soybean products, are good sources of calcium from plants.
Zinc is imperative for growth and development. Good plant sources include grains, nuts and legumes. However, zinc daily zinc requirements are actually quite low. Take care to select a supplement that contains no more than 15-18 mg zinc.

Vegetarians may have a greater risk of iron deficiency than non-vegetarians. Dried beans, spinach, enriched products, brewer's yeast and dried fruits are all good plant sources of iron. When eaten alongside a fruit or vegetable containing high amounts of vitamin C, your body more willingly absorbs the needed iron, so be sure to team these two vital nutrients up as much as possible when meal planning.

The Psychology of Love - Can Passion Last?

Add Comment
The popular understanding of the psychology of love is that when a couple embraces a committed long-term relationship, the passion and fire of new romance fades into affection, and mutual comfort. A recent study though reports that it isn't passion that fades; it is only the maddening obsession with the other that does. The romantic passion still can carry on, and sometimes does, forever. The traditional view that researchers held got the ardor of the new relationship all mixed up with the romance, the attraction and love. And TV sitcoms and movies have been no help either. All you hear in them is how people get hitched, and then despair in private over how they will never again experience another first date.
In the initial stages of a new love, you keenly feel how everything is up in the air: expectations are low, and the satisfaction felt in everything is very high. If you get a phone call from the other, you feel on top of the world. If you think about it, there is really nothing about a phone call that one would need to get all that worked up over. Expectations rise with greater certainty in a long-term relationship; and while individual highs may not be that rewarding, the overall general sense of happiness and well-being always appears uniformly high in studies of this kind. In research done recently on the psychology of love that was published in the respected professional magazine Review of General Psychology, researchers studied 150 couples in New York State who had relationships that lasted past the eight-year mark.
Big surprise, they found that when there was romantic love to begin with, all these fortunate people experienced intense attraction long term, an interest in each other, and rewarding sexual attraction as well. Fully 10% of the couples rated the romantic love they felt as the highest possible on the scale. It is their opinion than that given commitment and hard work put in, long-term relationships definitely reward people with romantic attachment that lasts forever. If you really get to thinking about the psychology of love, it isn't really an age thing at all; people can fall in love at 60 and feel exactly as carried away and as wonderful as they would falling in love at 16. You just need to pay a little attention to the steady level of joy you feel once the euphoria and manic excitement calm down a bit.
And as for the hard work part of the relationship, all you need to do is try to put the challenge back into that relationship, one pleasing example after another. Going to new places together, finding more about the way you react to situations, and of course a little naughty excitement - the way it is meant to be, all count as good freshness. Perhaps the best advice might be to not look too deeply into the psychology of love. Lots of couples who are earnest about finding themselves and finding each other often look at conventional wisdom about fading romance, with amusement. Often the answer is right with you, not out there.

Staying beautiful is something that women of all ages think about every single day. Beauty should be something that we see when we look within, but everyone wants to look good on the outside as well. There are many products on the market that can help anyone look better, but some people do not want to put what they think of as dangerous chemicals on their skin each and every day. If you feel this way, there are things you can do to achieve natural beauty care. Not only are you going to look better, but you are also going to feel better about using these products safely.
Natural beauty care can be for any part of your beauty routine. One of the most common ways to use natural products are to use them in your hair for softer and smoother tresses. One way to get softer and better looking hair is to use well aged, mashed bananas as a conditioning treatment. This will work wonders for your hair, but there is one drawback. The banana can be hard to get out of your hair, especially if you have long or curly hair. Be prepared to have to wash your hair more than once to get it out, but if you want great looking hair naturally, it might be worth the effort to do this treatment once a month. You can add a touch on honey if you wish, which may help the banana come out much more easily.
If you want to use something natural to take care of your skin, think about what your skin needs. You can use almost anything natural as an exfoliator, but you do not want to use something that is going to damage your skin. This is when you want to look online for natural beauty care items to take care of your skin. Some you can buy as a product or you may want to get the right natural ingredients and then blend your own products at home. You can make your own moisturizers as well if you know where to look to buy the right products.
Make up is a bit harder to find when you think about natural beauty care, but you can find some great products out there. Eye shadows and foundations are much harder to make on your own, but what you seek is on the market today. Think about natural mineral make up items and do your research to be sure these are truly natural and safe for your skin. Many companies with natural products will list each and every ingredient so you know what you are getting. If they do not list things for you, you may want to find someone else from whom to buy.
Natural beauty care is more than what you put on your body. It is also about what you put into your body. If you focus on drinking enough water each day, and eating as many fresh, organic foods as you can, you are going to look and feel better overall. You may find that some of your beauty issues go away on their own with a healthy and chemical free diet. It can be hard to eat right in a world full of processed foods, but you can do it with a little time and effort. You may soon find that your need to work on natural beauty care items is less as your body adjusts to your new eating plan and lifestyle.
